Phil Curtis

Philip Curtis is arguably the best-known of Arizona's modern artists. His surrealist images and dreamlike desert landscapes are seen in museums and private collections worldwide. He studied art at Yale University in the mid-1930s, then supervised WPA projects in New York City. He was sent by the WPA to Phoenix in 1936 to start the Phoenix Art Center, which later became the Phoenix Art Museum. After museum studies at Harvard University were interrupted by World War II, Curtis moved to Scottsdale in 1947 and lived there until his death in 2000.

Today the Philip Curtis Gallery at Phoenix Art Museum is among the most visited museum exhibits in Arizona. His work and that of Mark McDowell opened SOCA Gallery in 2006.
